A GOOD TRIP FOR SURREY…
from Pete Smith

After a long journey up the M4 from London and getting slightly lost in Bristol we arrived at the very nice Redwood Lodge Hotel & Country Club anticipating another good evening of squash.

We fielded a strong team tonight including a first appearance for Nicol David fresh from her World Open victory and Bristol were strong as well so we were in for a tight game.

I couldn't see all the matches but this is how the evening unfolded ...

A LONG WAY AWAY…
Framboise at Bristol ...  match reports from Pete Smith

Blimey, everybody seems to drive a long way to come to Bristol, even the refs. Normally, we have 4 refs, 2 markers and 2 refs that alternate on the two courts. But tonight, none of that. We had only two refs, and that was that!

Mind you, can’t complain, I know one of them, he’s been on the circuit for even longer than me, and he is Welsh, so surely, he’s got to be perfect, Mr Peter Lawrence, who by the way, drives 130 miles each way to come and ref here.

And also a gentleman I do not have the honour of knowing, Neil Fox, who was also MC'ing the event. Because of viewing arrangements, I couldn’t judge his talent as a ref, but as an MC, he was mighty fine.

And as his abilities as a ref, I would have heard if he hadn’t been satisfying, trust me on that one!

But it’s a shame that there are not enough refs to mark those games. Surely, they must be good people around here too…?

PETE'S POSTINGS
Surrey manager Pete Smith reports ...

This was always going to be tough for Emma taking on the World Open Champion and World Number 1. I could only see glimpses of the game due to the viewing but Emma started well in the 1st game and taking a lead but Nicol started working Emma all round the court with excellent length and width and balls to the front to take the game 9-5.

Nicol then came out continuing to work Emma and putting her under more and more pressure and showing her real class to take the next 2 games 9-0 9-2 and win the 1st rubber for Surrey H&RC.

Probuild Bristol 0 Surrey H & RC 1

"I had nothing to lose, and I went on to try and play my own game…

"What makes the difference is the pressure, the constant pressure Nicol puts you under. I felt fine at the start of each game, but half way, I felt suddenly rather tired and I found myself struggling…

"It’s good to play the best players to see how far you’ve got to go, even if you get a kick in the teeth, literally!"

FRAMS NOTE

Nicol, as the great pro she is, gave the junior all the respect she deserved, but I was expecting a wash out. And it was not. Yes, the match was short. Yes, the outcome was never in doubt. But I was impressed by the calm of Miss Chorley, and her good tactical sense. She never succumbed to the “going for shots” syndrome, she was as fit as to be expected, determined, and got some lovely volley drop shots that surprised the World number one.

And that, my friends, is an exploit on its own…

"Emma started off quite well, she played some good shots, whereas I made a couple of errors and found myself thinking that I had to do something!

"In the next two games, I got more comfortable with my game, with my length, and I started playing good shots instead of just trying to go for shots with no feeling for the ball whatsoever.

"She is a nice player, she’s got some good deceptive shots at the front, and she volleys very well…"

TO PAR OR NOT TO PAR…

I’m a bit slow, I know, but since the start of the season, I hadn’t noticed that the women were playing PAR in the PSL matches. And I didn’t realise it because to my knowledge, none of the matches I watched were actually played a point a rally.

And you’ve got to wonder why that change was decided. Yes, I can see why managers would want to shorten possible long matches, when two girls of similar level playing each other. But as you may have noticed within the PSL nights, many of the ladies matches are often one sided.

That’s why I fully support Peter Lawrence, the two managers of the teams and the girls, who decided to go the whole way and keep their normal traditional scoring.

No offence to Emma, but. First game was 12 minutes. Second, 4. Third, 9 and that is including a interruption for blood injury (when Nicol involuntarily hit her opponent in the mouth). In normal scoring. Surely, when you have a world champion world number 1 on court, you want to keep her as long a possible on court, not in and out, thank you Emma.

So, what about “good sense prevails”. If the match is bound to last for hours, by all means make it shorter. But for the rest, what about letting the girls/managers/refs decide on the day? I know, pretty daring….

 James Snell 0-3 Chris Simpson        6/9, 5/9, 6/9 (25m)

Chris was bouyant after recently recording his best career win against Graham Ryding (World #20) in Baltimore and he was playing superbly tonight. He controlled the match with some excellent length and drop winners and had James under constant pressure.

James battled well but due to the workload made mistakes which allowed Chris to win the match 3/0.

An excellent game of squash by both players and I think there was only 1 let!

"I’m slightly disappointed, we were close up to 4/5 each game, then I played some silly shots, and he didn’t….

"I played OK, but I hit too many mistakes at the wrong time, but then again, against a player that just beat the world number 16, that’s not bad…

GOD BLESS THE SPONSORS…

I know, I know, you are thinking, there she goes again, sucking up to the sponsors. Well, yes and no. Yes, I am often talking about the sponsors, but hey, wait for it, without them, so squash. So, dohhhhhhh. And no, I don’t talk about ALL the sponsors, but you’ve got to admit that you’ve got some serious squash lovers out there, and Gary Keefe is certainly one of those! Gary is the man behind the “Probuild” logo. And yes, he loves his squash.

“I’m a developer, so it’s not because I’m sponsoring a squash team that I’m going to earn any money”, he smiles. “No, I’ve been sponsoring the squash team here for four years now, and this is our first year in PSL, because the South West of England is dying to see some great squash. Normally, we’ve got to travel so far to see matches…”

And he was having so much fun that he called two mates of his to help with that new Probuild Bristol PSL team, Rob, from Youngs, a roofing company, and a solicitors company, Enriques Griffiths. And it’s not all about staying home only, you know, they travel with their team on all the away matches…

And the truth be told, they are victim of their own success, as they could have sold three times the number of tickets, and we weren’t cold, I’m here to tell you!

“This is cosy”, Gary laughed as we were slightly squashed during the closing match of the evening between Anthony and Adrian. “Well, we didn’t know what to expect. We could have had a stadium, and three spectators. So, we wanted to see how this year was going, and we’ll make some adjustments for next season”.

So, I was lucky, because my seat was in the front row, and was kept despite my constant in and out to go downstairs and talk with the players, and come up again to see the matches. But although some people had a restricted view, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves tremendously.

And if there are out there some investors who are trying to organise events, please, come around the South West of England. Spectators are dying for squash. I had the proof this PSL Night…

Hadrian Stiff 0-3 Bradley Ball           3/9, 8/10, 6/9 (29m)

Bradley is back played great squash and really enjoying the game and this was going to be a tough game against Hadrian the Bristol captain and crowd favourite.

Bradley came out firing and hitting the ball with such pace and accuracy and blew away Hadrian 9-3 in the 1st game. In the 2nd game Hadrian tried to gain more control and slow the game down a bit and along with it Bradley's pace taking the game to a tie break but Bradley gained match ball which ended up flat in the nick, 2-0 to Bradley.

The 3rd started tightly but Hadrian was having to work so hard due to the pace that Bradley kept the momentum to win the 3rd 9-6.

Excellent game of squash and Bradley was on fire!

Probuild Bristol 0 Surrey H & RC 3

"I found his pace hard work tonight. I felt that I had to try and slow the pace, because it would be stupid to try and match his game.

"So I tried to slow down and frustrate him, but I was not quite up to that game, my reaction time was just not good enough.

"Now, about the team defeat tonight, a 4/1 defeat, nearly a 3/2 with Adrian nearly taking the match, but in front of a great crowd, a great turn out, I feel it’s a very positive result. Hopefully we’ll say in the top two for the second half, and will make the play offs…"

"I’m really confident at the moment. I’m playing well, my energy is right up, and I know now that my rehabilitation’s paid off. I’m really happy about that, and I’m going to try and get back to the top 20/25 as soon as possible.

"I feel that without the rehabilitation, I would have not recovered from the injury. It was such a complicated, difficult injury to detect/treat that if I had been on my own, it would have probably beaten me. And now that I’m back, I want so much to play, because at some points I thought I would never be able to play again…"

OUR FAVOURITE FAN…

You have no idea how hard it was to get that man on the right on picture. The name, David Sobo. And yes, it may ring a bell. Yes, you’ve seen it a few times on our PSL pages as David writes for us when he can, as he follows his Surrey team wherever they go.

And listen to this one. Tuesday, David was actually working in Edinburgh, so, to be on time for the match, he had to take a plane. But the reward, not only he gets to see his team win yet again, but he gets a drive home with the Boss.

Makes it all worth it, init’ David…?

Joe Kneipp 3-1 Peter Nicol     9/5, 4/9, 9/7, 9/4 (41m)

I didn't see much of this match but since retiring Pete has not been able to get on court much so this was always going to be a tough game for him. Joe settled the quickest into a steady game and took the 1st game 9-5.

Pete then came out and played some fantastic squash to take the 2nd 9-4. The 3rd was a close game with Pete taking the lead 7-5 but Joe came back hard and played some excellent length and width to create the pressure to take the game 9-7.

In the 1st point of the 4th game Pete went for a ball in the backhand corner and seemed to tweak his hamstring, there was an injury break and he came back onto play but it was obvious that he couldn't stretch and run so Joe closed out the match 9-4 and 3-1.

From what I saw it was a very competitive game of squash enjoyed by the crowd.

FRAMS NOTE

“Squash is such a mental game it’s a joke”. Dixit James Willstrop. Well, in the case of Joe Kneipp, it’s so true it is definitely a joke.

Since the man has “retired” from major events, he’s never played better in his life. No stress. No world on the shoulders. No pressure. And all the shots are just coming in like in butterspread.

On the other hand, the Boss is really retired. He doesn’t play squash at the moment. And to tell you the truth, I doubt he’ll go on playing league matches for long… How could he just be a dabbler at a game that he dominated for so long?

And after he lost the third tonight, there was not way his fitness was going to carry him two more games anyway, as he very fairly stated after the match. But he gave it all tonight, as ever. And you could see his shots, his defensive lobs in particular tuning up as the match went along. But even an elastic band has a breaking point. And that’s what happened. Hamstring gone.

The body gave up before he did…

"I’m happy as hell. I don’t care if Peter is retired, so am I!

"I don’t care if it’s league, I don’t care he is nowhere near the Peter he was a few months back, I don’t care that I had to wait until he retired to beat him, but I never got to beat him in PSA or ever, I’m still happy that I’ve beat him."

"I enjoyed it immensely to the point where it was too painful to be bearable, at 6/4 in the third, and injury or no injury, Joe would have won that one.

"I haven’t played a game of squash since my last PSL match at St Georges. I’ve been doing a lot of physical activities, but not squash. But I still pushed myself tonight as if I did, it doesn’t stop me… And the pain tonight just became too much…

"My retirement is great, I’m having a brilliant time doing all sort of things. I’m doing all the things I set up myself to do, even things I discover I’m not very good at, which is not very pleasant…

"But I’m learning new skills, like organising events in a more detailed and technical way I ever did before, working on the Powerplate company, etc, , it’s quite a challenging time, where I’m learning to adjust..."

Adrian Grant 2-3 Anthony Ricketts  1/9, 9/4, 7/9, 9/5, 8/10 (51m)

I thought this could be a tight match and I wasn't proved wrong. Anthony came out in the 1st firing with so much pace which Adrian couldn't control and he took the game 9-1. In the 2nd Adrian started moving better and gained some pressure with some excellent length and drops to the front to take it 9-4.

The 3rd was nip and tuck all the way through with both producing some excellent retrieving and strokeplay and the odd mistake, Anthony took it 9-7. Adrian then came out in the 4th and played a brilliant game and looked very sharp onto the ball and evidently upped the pace, he took the 4th 9-5. Into the 5th both players were working very hard and it was very tight at 4all but Adrian then managed a run of points to take an 8-4 lead and match point which he clipped the top of the tin with a drop.

Anthony back in it and sensed a comeback, Adrian hit another drop down and gave away 2 strokes and with Anthony running everything down and hitting with pace he got it back to 8all saving 4 match points then continued to take the game and match 10-8 and 3-2.

A great and tense game of squash enjoyed by the crowd.

Probuild Bristol 1 Surrey H & RC 4

"Well, I haven’t exactly set the world on fire recently, but I’m really looking forward to play the next events, and I’m looking forward to doing well.

"At the moment, I’m very positive, I didn’t come to England for nothing. I came to play squash."

"Oh dear…

I feel really fine. I’ve learnt a lot about myself during my last trip to the US, both mentally and physically.

"I had a bad hip injury, and went on playing for three weeks, and I really pushed myself. I also had a few games where I thought I was done down by the ref, and I’ve learned that it’s at that point that the top guys know how to turn things to their advantage. I used to think that it was that luck was turning their way. But no, it’s actually a way to react and seize the opportunity that presents itself.

"And a match like today is the result of all that, as although I ended up losing, I really played well tonight, I controlled the ball well and grind it. And if you can grind it to Anthony, you can really do it to anybody can’t you?

But all credit to him, he was really pumped up in the last five points…

A very enjoyable evening and a great victory for Surrey H & RC which keeps us top after the 1st half. Well played to both sets of players and thanks to Hadrian and all at the Redwood Lodge Club for your hospitality, Just a two and a half hour car journey home now!

Next home match 6th Feb v St Georges Hill and Happy Christmas ...
