Duffield & Surrey extend
unbeaten runs ...
Roundup from
Howard Harding
Derbyshire's Benz-Bavarian
Duffield and Croydon's
PCL
Whitehall Security Surrey H&RC
extended their unbeaten
Premier Squash League
runs this season with convincing home wins in tonight's 3rd round
ties in the prestigious England
Squash league sponsored by
Towergate tlc.
In an
eagerly-awaited East Midlands derby, title-holders Duffield - who
now boast 18 successive ties without defeat - crushed former
champions
Nottingham
5/0 to maintain their
leadership of the Group A points table.
University Sport Birmingham
move up to second place following their 4/1 home win over league
newcomers Energie Fitness
Redditch - while a last-minute withdrawal from the
Pontefract squad saw the
Yorkshire side slip to a 3/2 home defeat to
Esporta Oxford.
The 4/1 win over
UniSport Guildford
extends Surrey H&RC's lead at the top of the Group B standings - but
second-placed PNH Properties
Chichester, with a tie in hand, are also unbeaten this
season after clinching a late-night 3/2 home win over
Luxfords St George's Hill.
It was an under-strength
Nottingham squad which arrived in Duffield for the twice-yearly PSL
fixture which always attracts full houses. But the visitors were
under pressure from the start when
Sarah Kippax failed to
exploit her two-game advantage over lower-ranked
Laura Hill, as the
Duffield star - a full-time Derbyshire fire-fighter - fought back to
clinch the tie opener 6-9, 8-10, 9-6, 9-6, 10-8.
Two PSL stalwarts were
making their debuts for Duffield - and both immediately impressed
their new Derbyshire fans: Nick
Taylor, the British
Open and British
National Over-35 champion from Manchester, despatched
Nottingham's Eddie Charlton
9-7, 6-9, 9-3, 9-4. To round off the evening and clinch
the maximum points win for the hosts, Australian
Stewart Boswell, a
long-time regular for Edgbaston Priory, defeated Nottingham No1
John Rooney 9-4, 9-2,
9-1.
Pontefract took an early
lead against Esporta Oxford when
Lauren Siddall beat the
visitors' Rachel Donald
9-1, 9-2, 9-4. But the late withdrawal of England international
Lee Beachill from the
Pontefract squad led to Namibian
Ryan Thompson and Indian
Saurav Ghosal
stepping up the team order, while 17-year-old local player
Sam Wileman took over
the fourth string position. All three, however, lost to the
established Esporta opposition - but squad number one
James Willstrop reduced
the deficit for his home club with a testing 5-9, 9-7, 9-5, 4-9, 9-5
victory over the visitors'
Cameron Pilley, from Australia.
Visitors Energie Fitness
Redditch also established an early lead at University Sport
Birmingham when the Worcestershire club's
Jaclyn Hawkes, a New
Zealander, fought back from 1/2 down to upset higher-ranked England
international Laura
Lengthorn-Massaro 9-5, 5-9, 7-9, 9-7, 9-7.
A second match seemed to
be going Redditch's way when fourth string
Adam Stevenson built up
a 9-5, 9-4, 7-1 lead over the University side's
Alistair Mutch. But an
accidental slip caused the Yorkshireman's back to go into spasm -
and, despite being just two points away from victory, Stevenson was
forced to concede the match to Mutch.
But the 'match of the
night' was reserved for the top string clash between Birmingham's
16-year-old Egyptian Mohamed El
Shorbagy and England number six
Jonathan Kemp - in which
the teenager upset his experienced opponent, ranked some 100 places
higher in the world, 9-5, 7-9, 9-5, 12-10 in 34 minutes.
The Group B encounter
between two England team-mates
Vicky Botwright and
Alison Waters produced a notable upset - and the only win
of the evening for UniSport Guildford in their all-Surrey clash with
Croydon-based PCL Whitehall Security Surrey H&RC. Waters, ranked
seven places lower in the world list than Botwright, beat the
Manchester star 9-5, 9-5, 9-2. Both had only just returned from
Tour action in Hong Kong - where Botwright scored the win of her
life by beating the newly-crowned world champion
Rachael Grinham.
Botwright's club-mates
went on to score straight games wins over their Guildford opponents,
with England international Peter
Barker rounding off the home side's success with a 9-2,
10-8, 9-3 victory over UniSport stalwart
Stephen Meads.
By comparison with
Pontefract, PNH Properties Chichester were boosted at the
last-minute by the unexpected availability of top string
Mohd Azlan Iskandar.
And the world No17 from Malaysia was called upon to clinch a decider
when the tie was poised at 2/2 when he faced Luxfords St George's
Hill's top string Alister Walker.
An away win looked on the
cards as Walker took the opening two games and forced the third into
a tie-break. But the experienced Malaysian held his nerve and
retained the initiative to record a tie-winning 6-9, 8-10, 11-9,
9-6, 9-3 victory.

Brian Hargrave reports
Hill finally catches fire and snatches
victory from the jaws of defeat
Laura
Hill (Eng 7) beat Sarah Kippax 6-9 8-10 9-6 9-6 10-8
First on the glass
back saw Laura Hill (Eng No 7) take on Sarah Kippax ranked 3
places lower in the National rankings. Hill was slow out of the
traps and Kippax was 4-0 up before the crowd had hardly settled
into their seats. The score quickly moved to 7-2 as Hill
struggled to find her touch and the Derbyshire fire fighter was
not moving with her usual fluency. Kippax was playing well and
moving her opponent all around the court. Hill closed the gap to
8-6 but Kippax went one nil up in just 6 minutes. The second
started in similar fashion as Kippax quickly established a 4-1
lead controlling the T and making her opponent do most of the
running. Hill hung on and despite a few tins and mistimed shots
managed to level at 8 all only for Kippax to edge the game 10-8
with a shot that Hill was certain was out of court. Hill’s
protests fell on stony ground but the disputed point possibly
worked to her advantage.
A
slightly aggrieved Hill was still struggling to find her touch
in the third and Kippax looked home and dry with leads of 4-1,
5-2 and 6-4. Hill gritted her teeth and was fighting like a
tiger with the noisy crowd cheering her every winning point. She
somehow clawed her way back to take the game 9-6. In the fourth
Hill’s movement and positional play was much improved as she
grew in confidence to build a 6-1 lead which she let slip to 7-6
before levelling the scores with another 9-6 scoreline.
The fifth was a real see saw game as Hill took a 3-0 lead but
Kippax quickly levelled. Hill then got to 5-3 and again Kippax
levelled. Hill edged to 8-6 and match point but yet again Kippax
levelled. Hill got a second match point at 9-8 and a just stroke
saw the Duffield local girl home with clenched fists to loud
acclaim.
The two managers
were lost for words, unsure whether Kippax had snatched defeat
from the jaws of victory or whether Hill had snatched victory
from the jaws of defeat. Certainly the much improved Kippax
would have been disappointed to lose from 2 games up and 5-2 up
in the third but Hill is renowned for her fighting qualities
whether fighting fires at work or opponents on court.
The CB prediction
is on track.
Taylor a double winner on
his Duffield PSL debut
Nick
Taylor beat Eddie Charlton 9-7 6-9 9-3 9-4
Nick Taylor was
making his Duffield PSL debut and the British O35 champion was
taking on the promising Eddie Charlton just 19 years of age. The
first game was nip and touch with long tight rallies
interspersed with an abundance of lobs and tight drops from both
players. The Taylor was never behind scorewise and squeezed home
9-7 after 10 intriguing minutes.
The second game was over in half the time but this time Charlton
took the game 9-6 forcing Taylor to take risks to save energy
and to reduce the length of the rallies. Taylor’s experience
began to show in the fourth but despite being to work hard for
every point Taylor won the crucial third game 9-3. Taylor had
broken his opponent’s resistance an sensed blood as he went for
the kill to take the fourth 9-4 in just 7 minutes as both
matches finished almost simultaneously leaving Duffield with a
2-0 lead.
Taylor went on to
win a bottle of wine in the raffle to crown an enjoyable night
wearing the new Duffield kit sponsored by Head UK.
Whippy with two Ps puts the
icing on the cake (and the cream on the Massarella Lemon
meringue pie)
Andy
Whipp beat Jethro Binns 9-0 9-5 9-6
In
the first game of the season Andy Whipp went on court needing
another P on the name on his shirt. The new printed version
contained his favourite name of Whippy and the Manchester lad
has over the past two seasons established himself as a crowd
favourite with his attacking style. Binns was completely
whipped in the first as Whipp won 9 consecutive points in just 4
blistering minutes as he twisted and turned his opponents all
around the court with a variety of shots.
Binns, the British
University champion in 2007, came out fighting in the second
taking a deserved 4-0 lead before Whipp came down from cloud 9
and narrowed the gap to 5-3 before reeling off 6 quick points
to take the game 9-5. The third followed a very similar fashion
with Whipp coming back from 6-4 down to secure the team victory,
bonus pints and an eighteenth win on the trot.
Whipp was later
spotted pouring lashings of cream on the famous Massarella
lemon meringue pie whilst Binns was still wondering what had hit
him.
BSPA Solent champion still
winning and on cloud 9
Stait
Alex Stait beat Arthur Gaskin 9-6 10-8 1-9 10-8
Alex Stait, who had
won the BSPA Solent Classic on Sunday defeating Andy Whipp in
the quarter finals, Alex Gough in semi finals and Tim Vail in
the final, went on court looking fairly relaxed and confident
but the vastly improved Gaskin, the Irish No 3, was intent on
bringing Stait back down to earth, The quality of the squash was
very pleasing with some long tight rallies interspersed with
plenty of lobs. Stait took the first 9-6 and an even closer
second 10-8. Stait’s concentration went at the start of the
third and Gaskin took full advantage reeling of 9 consecutive
points as Stait let the game go 9-1 without too much resistance
in just 5 minutes.
The fourth game was almost identical to the second with Gaskin
flying all around the court and Stait struggling to regain the
initiative. Gaskin had a game ball at 8-7 but let the chance
slip. A relieved Stait finally squeezed home 10-8 in a rubber
which had thrown up more than its fair share of difficult
decisions. My eyesight is not what it was but if Stait’s offer
to buy a pair of specs from Specsavers is not taken up I may
well step in as I must admit to not being certain on a few
occasions, Gaskin has probably never played better if it’s any
consolation.
The CB prediction
of a 5-0 win is looking good at this stage.
Boswell impresses on debut
as Rooney blitzed by man from down under
Stewart Boswell beat John Rooney 9-4 9-2 9-1
Stewart
Boswell, formerly Edgbaston Priory, was making his debut for
Duffield. Boswell came in as a last minute replacement for Nick
Matthew who was only just in the UK from Hong Kong after three
hectic back to back PSA events. Boswell himself should have been
playing in the Pakistan Open which has been cancelled due to the
problems in that country.
Thus with Ong Beng Hee missing from the Nottingham team it was
an ideal opportunity to give Nick Matthew a well deserved rest
and allow Stewart Boswell a chance to step in to ensure he plays
sufficient group ties to be eligible for the play offs should
Duffield finish in the top two in Group A. Unfortunately the
Australian’s expected opponent and our long time “thorn in the
side” Simon Parke was a last minute withdrawal due to injury.
The impressive
Boswell was in no mood to mess around as he was hitting the ball
very crisply displaying a wonderful variety of shots to delight
the home supporters and giving his game opponent the run around.
Boswell quickly established a 7-0 lead in the first game and
went on to take the game 9-4 with Rooney chasing shadows. The
second and third games were even quicker and Rooney was a little
outclassed as Boswell won the second 9-2. The pattern of play in
the third was identical with Boswell now in complete control and
taking the game 9-1 to complete a whitewash and to agree with
the 5-0 CB prediction.
NEXT MATCH
Birmingham University (home) on next Tuesday 20 November 2007.
Uni will be playing Mohamed El Shorbagy, Jonny Harford, Steve
Coppinger, Joel Hinds and Laura Lengthorn (Eng No 5).
Unfortunately Tania Bailey will be missing as she has torn her
adductor and so will not be able to play for at least 3 weeks.
Laura Hill will deputise and we will need your support against a
team which is very strong down the order.

Manager and Secretary
 |
Ian Robinson reports
Near neighbours Surrey Health and
Racquets Club showed no hospitality at all (on court) to a
depleted UniSport Guildford team, soundly beating the visitors
4 - 1.
UniSport were deprived of Stacey Ross, their influential
number 1 string, who opted to commit to the PSA tour for an
event in Northern Spain instead of sampling the sunny
delights of Croydon. This promoted all the UniSport
players up one place in the team order and was a handicap too
far with the powerful hosts showing no mercy. In fact Surrey
H & R also had their absentees but with such a powerful squad
at their disposal it was of no consequence.Vicky
Botwright 0-3
Alison Waters
5/9, 5/9, 2/9
We welcomed back from their
travels two top flight ladies, Vicky Botwright World number 7
and Alison Waters World number 14, who had both distinguished
themselves in the recent flurry of WISPA events in the East.
Both players are at the top of their game at the moment but
both players were significantly travel weary as well.
As it happened Waters was less so and in this instance managed
to utilise the necessary 'gas in the tank' in order to
prevail. It was a little disappointing as this might have
been match of the day but in fact was not as 'live' as it
might have been, through no real fault of the players - it had
more to do with the calendar. UniSport were delighted to make
such an emphatic start and for the only time in the evening
their supporters were with smile and a 1 - 0 lead.
Adrian Waller 3-0
Alex Ingham 9/4, 9/5, 9/6
Alex Ingham was making his first
start of the season and has been hitting well in practise, but
that form is not transferring onto the match court - never the
best way round. Adrian Waller the British Junior Champion is
also a formidable adversary of the young UniSport player and
is by some margin taller and more imposing on the court.
Co-incidentally they are both left handers. The ball was
given a big pummelling and was very bouncy in the hot
conditions, which did not lend itself to much control work,
but it must be said that both players tried to play their
shots.
The big difference over the three games to the home player was
that Ingham was not as consistent and made too many mistakes
to mount a serious challenge. That is not to say that it was
one sided because it was not, but Ingham will do a lot better
when he has curtailed these extravagances. To a degree Ingham
did so in the third game, showing plenty of signs of fight and
commitment, but it was all too late as by now Waller was as
good as home and dry after his shower. Disappointingly the
tide had started to turn 1 - 1 against UniSport Guildford.Bradley
Ball 3-0
Jesse Engelbrecht
9/5, 9/5, 9/4
Bradley Ball has been a thorn in
the UniSport side for some time in PSL, he is currently plying
his trade with the Surrey team and as usual put in one of his
blunderbuss style performances. His ability to bludgeon the
ball dead with great regularity from all over the court
remains healthily in tact, much to Jesse Engelbrecht's
dismay.
The UniSport player has begun to show some form and was
relishing the opportunity to take on the rangy and higher
ranked Ball. It was an interesting contrast of Engelbrecht's
greater mobility against the severe hitting and ball control
of his opponent. There were moments where Engelbrecht
troubled Ball but the Surrey player kept bouncing back without
any hint that he the bubble might burst, if you get my
drift... In the end Ball ran out a comfortable winner which
took Surrey H & RC into a 2 - 1 lead.
Chris Simpson 3-0
Phil Rushworth 10/8,
9/4, 9/6
Following Ingham on the outside
was a turbo-charged Phil Rushworth finally free of injury for
the first time this season. He celebrated by mounting a
fierce attack on his younger more illustrious opponent, Chris
Simpson - one of the bright young hopes of English squash
currently World ranked number 55. Rushworth was playing with
terrific confidence and produced some outstanding winners from
nowhere, completely taking his opponent by surprise, but as
much as he was playing with confidence he was not quite
playing with the belief that the damage he was inflicting
would ultimately do the job.
The first game was pivotal, he led nearly all the way until at
the end when Simpson used his greater experience of
championship squash to steal the game at the death aided by an
ill-conceived error from Rushworth. With a bit more belief
this game could have been UniSport's and the doubts might well
have started to creep into Simpson's play. As it was, the
doubts prevailed in Rushworth's mind and he did not really
turn up for the second game. With a 2 game deficit against
him and seemingly the match beyond saving, the UniSport player
relaxed a little and started to play with more composure and
little more discipline finding good balance between attack and
defence which gave Simpson an uncomfortable night.
This gave Surrey H & RC the winning match points and a lead of
3 - 1. Rushworth should take much encouragement from this as
this was another level again from where he has been with his
game and should be a springboard to better things. Peter
Barker 3-0
Stephen Meads
9/2, 10/9, 9/3
Last but by no means least Steve
Meads at the head of the order was a place too high against a
younger, faster and more devastating opponent, ex UniSport
player, Peter Barker who rides high in the World order at
number 13. Meads, once a world number 11 in the dim distant
past, was determined to show his worth but on this occasion he
was given a lesson in what the passage of time does to the
human body.
Calling on all his experience and trying to take control away
from his younger opponent, it was sadly never going to be
enough. Suffice to say that it was an interesting match with
no real surprise about the outcome but credit goes to the
UniSport favourite as every point he won was well and truly
deserved. The second game was noteworthy for the belated come
back mounted by Meads who played some good squash but it was
still not enough to get his name on the scoreboard. Barker in
contrast gives us a player to follow with some interest to see
whether he can fulfil his potential on the International
stage.
The match score finished at 4 - 1 in favour of Surrey Health
and Racquets Club, which on the night was a fair reflection on
the balance of power. A disappointing night for UniSport who
realistically never came close to stealing another winning
match after the good start provided by Alison Waters.
Next week UniSport take
on local rivals St George's Hill at the Varsity Centre Tuesday
20th November starting at 7pm. Tickets are on sale
now. This is the last match of the first half of the season,
so the team look forward to some home support after a tough
time out on their travels. See you there.
