The opening night of the 2005/06 Premier Squash League saw the two pre-season favourites, Manchester/Pontefract and Churchill Edgbaston, open up with wins. Man/Pont took a quick 3-0 lead at Nottingham before winning 4-1, but Edgbaston had to rely on world number three David Palmer to see them home in the decider against Duffield's in-form Nick Matthew.

In the Southern group Unisport Guildford despatched newcomers Birmingham USB 4-1 in the clash of the University-based teams, while Oberthur Strings, winners of the group last season, carried on their winning ways with a 3-2 home win over Chichester.
