Winning start for Surrey
Newcomers Surrey Health & Racquets made a winning start on their PSL
debut, but Oberthur Strings made them work harder than many pundits
predicted.
Surrey's first Nicol, world number three Nicol David, got them off
to a winning start against Carla Khan, although the London-based
Pakistani no 1 fought hard for the entire match, picking up many of
David's 'winners' and never giving up the chase.
Daryl Selby, fresh from his Hungarian quarter-final appearance,
levelled it for the visitors as he gained and lost a 2-0 lead against the
experienced Tim Garner. However the youngster recovered his form in
the fifth to earn a 3-2 win.
Another Strings youngster, Alister Walker, put the visitors ahead
with a 3-0 win over Bradley Ball. Three close games, with
sensational retrieving by both players, but Walker always seemed to just
have the edge, keeping Ball constantly on the back foot, and although he
never gave up, Ball couldn't quite close the gap in any of the games.
It wasn't looking good for Surrey as Alex Stait took the first game
against Phil Barker, but Barker recovered to take the next three
and set up a decider, but with the other Nicol, Peter, at number one, Surrey were strong
favourites. Cameron Pilley ran the world number six close in
the first two games, forcing Nicol to retrieve and expend energy, but when
Nicol took the second 12/10, after saving three game balls, it was Pilley who ran out of steam, as the
home number one closed out the third 9/1 to clinch a debut victory for
Surrey.
"What
a fantastic opening night of our PSL campaign – we couldn't have asked for
a better situation with Peter Nicol winning the decider to close the
evening," said Surrey Health & Racquets team manager Pete Smith.
"Nicol David was brilliant too, and has obviously made a big hit with our
members by sitting in the crowd to watch all the matches after she'd
finished playing. At the end of the evening there was a club full of
smiling faces, as well as a very happy manager!"

Duffield win East Midlands
Derby
Meanwhile Benz-Bavarian Duffield raced
to a 3-0 lead against Nottingham to clinch their first win of the season,
finally winning 4-1.
Lincolnshire's world No10 Tania Bailey showed no signs of a recent
adductor strain as she pushed Duffield into an early lead by beating
Nottingham's Pamela Nimmo 9-2 9-4 9-0.
The Derbyshire club's home supporters revelled in further wins by home
hero Paul Hargrave, third string Jonathan Kemp and top
string Nick Matthew – but second string Renan Lavigne was unable to
make it a clean sweep as he went down to long-time rival Simon Parke
in five games as visitors Nottingham claimed a consolation point after
fighting back from 0-2 down against Renan Lavigne.
A new trophy was unveiled at Duffield tonight – the PDH Sports East
Midlands Challenge Trophy, which will be presented to the winners of this
regular East Midlands derby clash. After being claimed by Duffield,
Nottingham will now have to wait until next year for the chance to win it
back!

QUOTE OF THE ROUND:

"Stewart [Boswell] was much better after the first game because he
changed his shorts and was able to move better."
Vicky Botwright |
"Simon
was the first person I played when I made my debut for Duffield in
1999. I was just starting out and he was No3 in the world – and I
beat him.
"At seven-all in the final game, we had an amazing rally which ended
in a let – and I didn't recover from that. We always have close
games, but I'm disappointed I didn't win this one."
